LACROSSE - In their final away game of the season, the Eau Claire Crush lost to the River City Rough Riders 49-6 Saturday afternoon at UW-Lacrosse’s Veterans Memorial Field.
Despite many strong individual performances, the Crush were overwhelmed by too many turnovers and penalties. Crush quarterback Cameo King threw three interceptions and fumbled twice while wide receiver Aaron Solie threw an interception of his own.
There were positive signs from the offense though, as King rushed 7 times for 30 yards and running back Tanner Olek ran 6 times for 25 yards and a late touchdown. “That late drive was about persistence, hard work, and people that didn’t want to quit,” Olek said.
On defense, the Crush (1-3) gave up a lot of yards, but were also able to make big plays. Linebackers Colin Brown and Austin Ugo had strong games. Brown had 8 tackles and 1.5 sacks, while Ugo had 6 tackles and half a sack of his own.
Defensive backs Ben Reisner and Kenny Ingle were all over the field and each had an interception. Defensive lineman Shannon Herrick added six tackles and defensive back Xavier Thompson had five tackles and recovered a fumble.
Despite the solid individual efforts, the focus was on teamwork after the game. “We need to learn to hit the gaps,” Ingle said. “In the secondary, there were too many mental mistakes that led to touchdowns.”
Next week, the Crush will take on the Chippewa Valley Predators in a game that could have serious playoff implications. “The Predators are a top-notch team,” linebacker coach James Dickinson said. “They are very balanced and we are going to need strong individual performances to win. If we eliminate the mental mistakes, we will be fine.”
