"It was a big win for us today," Coach Fred Hoversholm.
EAU CLAIRE - The Eau Claire Crush rode a strong running game and stout defense to a 26-14 victory over the Central Wisconsin Spartans at Carson Park.
Crush running back Tommy Green led the rushing charge with 123 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Quarterback Brock Pottenger added 73 yards and a touchdown of his own and wide receiver Aaron Solie chipped in 63 rushing yards.
“The o-line really picked it up today,” Green said. “They played really good.”
Defensive back John Heck was one of the key players on a Crush defense that allowed only three rushing yards to the Spartans’ offense in the first half and forced four turnovers overall. Heck picked off Central Wisconsin quarterback Darrel Lafferty twice while fellow defensive back Kenny Ingle had one of his own.
“It was a big win for this team,” Crush head coach Fred Hoversholm, who announced that this year would be his last with the team, added. “We were missing 10 players, but didn’t lie down.”
There still is room to improve as the passing game never got into a rhythm and the Crush (1-0) had five turnovers of their own.
“I have to tuck that ball,” Green said while shaking his head. “That’s something we need to work on as a team: turnovers.”
“We will go back and look at the technique now,” Hoversholm said. “But this was a big win for us and we got some valuable game experience.”
